The Spanish Holocaust – Part Two 55:00, 2003 (Ref: EU03866)

Description

In part two of THE SPANISH HOLOCAUST – the second of two documentaries that tell the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship that followed – we speak with the relatives of those murdered in the war who tell of the brutality during the war and their attempts to locate the bodies of their loved ones who were murdered.

In this documentary we see how Franco’s Fascist troops took out their wrath on civilians. In the words of General Sagardia – “I will shoot 10 Catalans for every man of mine shot”. The numerous mass graves in Pallars Sobira show he kept his word.

MASS GRAVES: Many of the mass grave sites are known only to locals. Virtually none of them bears a plaque or any other indication to commemorate the killings. By contrast, in Leon, the Truth Association (which is investigating killings during the war) has concentrated its efforts on exhuming bodies from mass graves. The relatives of the victims complain it should be the government not volunteers exhuming the bodies.

WALL OF SILENCE: The wall of silence erected by Franco’s dictatorship has simply been continued by the current Spanish government. The locals have now decided to take matters into their own hands and claw through the mud to find out what happened to their loved ones.
