Whose Beans Are They? 6:00, 2003 (Ref: AF03111)

Description

A huge issue, which has become a source of dispute between developing countries and western nations is the patenting of agricultural products in poor countries by multi-national companies.

Under the present rules, all nations must recognise patents. We travelled to Ghana in West Africa where the world’s second largest producer of cocoa is threatened with having its beans patented by large companies such as Mars and Monsanto.

This practice will have far reaching effects and Ghana says it will rob them of millions of dollars, which they desperately need to pay off loans.
