Thousands of brides are abandoned in India following arranged marriages to non-resident Indians. The women, whose families have often sold everything in order to marry them off, are left high and dry, unmarriageable, childless and their families economically ruined. We chase one case all the way back to Britain and find that Ritu (bride) was promised a textile engineer from a good home in Britain. Instead, she got Sanjeev, currently in jail for possession of heroin and formerly in jail for assault in a nightclub – also with girlfriend and baby. He took the dowry, went on the honeymoon and returned to Britain with Ritu’s family fortune.
