Description

Against the Odds is the moving story of Kakenya Ntaiya, a young Maasai woman from Kenya, who was promised in marriage when she was five years old.

Kakenya’s hunger for an education and strong determination lead her to fight tradition and convince the elders of her community to allow her to get an education when her peers were dropping out of school to get married and have FGM.

Against the odds, Kakenya fought her way out of her village to complete her education in the United States – the only girl ever to do so.  But she had to pay a big price.

Kakenya used to plough the fields and collect water in her village, but is now studying at university in Pittsburgh in the USA where life is extremely challenging for the 27-year-old.

She is getting used to the different food and the ways of speaking. But an even bigger problem is that she has met a man in the USA who has proposed to her.

Part of a 28 x 25-minute documentary series produced for the BBC.
