Home Sweet Home: After the Quake, 45-minutes, 2010 (Ref: 767)

To give an insight into the months that follow a devastating earthquake, we have an amazing film from China that follows a group of survivors for more than a year after China’s massive quake in 2008. The quake killed almost 90,000 people and left more than 5-million homeless. We follow the fortunes of 82-year-old Mrs Liu who was lucky to survive. Her house and most of her village – Ping Qiao – was destroyed. Months after the quake she was still searching among the ruins of her home for anything she could salvage. Then there’s her long-suffering daughter-in-law Xiong, who tries to keep the peace between mother and son, despite having a busy and responsible job of her own. As head of the village production team, Xiong is in charge of handing out relief supplies and getting the village rebuilding project underway. Grandma Liu is a feisty woman at odds with her son Li over where to rebuild their house. Li is also driven to distraction by his mother’s hoarding habits. As fast as she collects remnants from her house and takes them back to their crowded temporary home, Li throws them out. Produced for the BBC, 'Home Sweet Home: After the Quake' is a beautifully-crafted film that follows Grandma Liu's story, and that of her son and his wife, as they try to rebuild their shattered lives.
