She’s known as “The
Saharan Ghandi” for her strong convictions and
courage. Last month Aminatu Haidar, from Western
Sahara, caused a huge diplomatic row between Spain
and Morocco. For more than 20-year Aminatu has been
fighting for independence for Western Sahara – which
was occupied by Morocco after the Spanish and French
colonisation ended in Morocco in 1975. She has won
numerous international awards for her struggle –
including the Robert Kennedy Human Rights Award and
the European Parliament’s Award for Human Rights –
and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.
Last month she went on hunger strike for 32-days in
Lanzarote airport when the Moroccan authorities
would not allow her to return to Western Sahara –
putting her on the front page of newspapers
everyday. This film gives extraordinary access to
that story and the powerful historical story of one
of Africa’s most courageous women. |
