In the third episode
of the documentary series THE OTHER AMERICA we look
at the extent to which tourism can have a major
impact on the economic lives of the poor. It may
look like one long holiday but the business of
tourism is big and can have a major impact on the
economic lives of the poor. It's labour intensive so
supplies lots of jobs and earns valuable foreign
currency. Big resorts, backpacker tours, and
developments designed to include the local
communities are all part of the business. We look at
these different faces of the industry in Mexico,
Nicaragua and Peru to try to understand the
potential of each one to change the lives of the
poorest.
Part of a 5 x
25-minute documentary series produced for the BBC.
