It has taken nearly
three decades of careful trust building between
China’s Islamic minority and the Communist central
government to enable free and flourishing Islamic
life within autonomous regions of China. Now that
trust is under threat. Chinese authorities claim
they have foiled Islamic terrorist plots designed to
disrupt the Olympic games. The more than 20 million
Chinese Moslems are concerned. Suspicion and
mistrust could destroy what they have so carefully
built. Gaining television journalist access to
Islamic life in China is very difficult because of
the authorities suspicions and fears among Islamic
Chinese officials and citizens. We did succeed in
capturing Islamic life, profiling Imams - Islamic
Chinese clerics - hearing their concerns over these
alleged terrorist plots, and the impact it may have
on their Islamic society. We go deep into the
Islamic Autonomous region of Ninshua within the Gobi
Desert, and in Islamic centres in Bejing. |
