Pakistan makes jeans
for the world’s leading brands at €3 a piece. The
country has a handful of multi-millionaires and
armies of workers earning slave wages. Cheap labour
is an irresistible draw for Europe’s textile
industry, much of which has moved its business to
Pakistan. The other side of the coin is that many
Pakistanis have immigrated to cities in Europe in
search of a better life. Pakistan’s society is split
between a Westernized elite and Islamic militants,
who were armed and trained by the Pakistan army and
the US during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
But the attacks on New York’s World Trade Center in
2001 radically changed US policy towards Pakistan.
We visited Islamabad, Lahore and the Gujarat region.
The report reveals a society that silently shrouds
the violence and injustice suffered by nearly half
of the population. |
