Diabetes is the new
disease that is having devastating affects in the
industrialised world. But despite being of epidemic
proportions in New York, it’s below the radar.
Doctors are saying that it could cripple the USA’s
health care system, with the young especially
vulnerable. An estimated 500-thousand New Yorkers
suffer from diabetes. A new report from the city’s
health department says from 1990 to 2003…
diabetes-related deaths increased 71 percent. And
hospital costs associated with the disease doubled.
If untreated, it inflicts blindness, amputation of
limbs, heart disease and ultimately death. |
