We look at the stress
and strain that the Venezuelan economy has come
under due to the policies and ideologies of
President Hugo Chávez. In the past few months, it’s
become harder to fill up a shopping basket in
Venezuela. Eggs, sugar, beans, oil and, above all,
milk are hard to find. At the Megamercals, the
state-run street markets, food products are sold at
three to four times below market price, but they’re
rationed. To make up for the scarcity of staple
products, the government has been forced to import
food on an unprecedented scale. President Chávez
enjoys massive support from the people thanks to his
social programs, which have meant a huge increase in
literacy, alleviating poverty by the creation of
jobs in poor areas and greater spending on public
services such as health care. But last month he lost
a vote to change the constitution which would have
allowed him to stand for president again. |
