This is the story of one woman's battle to save the dolphins in the Straits of
Gibraltar. That's where the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean meet the warm
Mediterranean Sea, offer a rich combination of nutrients that make it an ideal
home for dolphins, whales, orcas and turtles. Whale watching, the viewing of
these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat from small boats, has become
a multi-million euro industry in Tarifa and the surrounding areas, and
biologists and politicians alike are eager to
encourage this eco-tourism to ensure a gentle, more
sustainable development, avoiding the 24 hour party
scene that dominates the concrete jungles of the
Costa del Sol. However, the complex geopolitics of
the Straits are placing ever-increasing pressures on
these animals, raising great concern from both
national and international scientific communities
about their long term survival. |
