The brutal civil wars
that have torn apart Central American countries like
Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have left their
mark on society. The violence and poverty left in
the wake of conflict have paved the way for violent
street gangs that have brought endless waves of
crime to these countries. But why does Nicaragua
appear to be the exception? In Managua, the
journalist and writer Mónica Zalaquett is the
director of Ceprev, the Centre for the Prevention of
Violence, which has tackled the problem head on. Her
lucid analysis of the situation was the first step
to finding a solution. Then hard work, dedication
and working directly with the street gangs in
Managua’s poor districts got results. In this
report, Monica Zalaquett and her collaborators show
us how they work and how they have convinced some
hardened delinquents to give up gang warfare and
devote their energy to neighbourhood social
projects. In just eight years, Ceprev has disbanded
over 100 gangs in Managua - a unique achievement in
Central America and probably in the world. |
