The rise of the middle
classes in China means the Chinese now dominate in
the world of classical violinists. 200 years ago
classical music was an exclusively European
preserve. Then the Americans came. Then the
Japanese. Now it's the Chinese. Nowhere is it more
obvious than among violinists. The last two winners
of the renowned Paganini prize have been Chinese.
With the rise of the Chinese middle class, and a
tradition of discipline which means parents can
force children to practise five hours a day, China
is starting to dominate the world of classical
music. And the Chinese are leading the world in
violin making as well. |
