The Pakistani tribal
zones along the Afghan border are off-limits to
journalists - for a good reason. The region has
become a safe haven for the Taliban. For 25-years,
the Pakistani secret services have used the
territory of the Pashtoon tribes, very devout and
conservative, as a platform for Jihad. First with
the aid of the CIA to oppose the Soviets who had
invaded Afghanistan, then to form the Taliban, a
militia of young Pashtoons who had taken refuge in
Pakistan. At the end of 2001, thousands of Taliban
and Al Qaida combatants fleeing American bombs fled
to the tribal zones, where Jihadists are not
terrorists, but heroes. Under American pressure, the
Pakistani army launched massive military operations
to cleanse the terrorist tribal zone in 2006. But
the war turned to disaster. |
