Levels of gun violence
in Brazil are off the scale, comparable to a war
zone. Every year, thousands are killed or
injured. Can the government and civil society make
the streets safe again? Brazil has become one of the
most violent places in the world with more deaths
from firearms than in many a war-torn country.
According to a report from 2002, almost 40,000
people are killed in Brazil every year. In the state
of Rio de Janeiro, 18 people die every day from
gunfire. Firearms have become the first cause of
death among young people, killing more than traffic
accidents or illness. |
