Catalonia is the
second most popular place in the world for
immigrants after the USA. More than a million people
arrive there every year. The percentage of immigrant
students is rocketing, changing the face of Catalan
schooling in the process - a situation that is
similar all over the western world. Several
immigrants at Can Puig High School in Sant Pere de
Ribes were followed closely during their first year
at the school. Catalan society is changing and its
classrooms are a good place to see how. Starting
Anew in a school in a foreign country can be a
traumatic experience for any youngster. How do they
feel? How are they viewed by the local students? Do
they integrate? Do their grades suffer from the
change? Can teachers meet the challenge of adapting
their classes to the newcomers without slowing the
progress of other students?
This film was nominated for the Japan Prize in 2006. |
