Life is at a
crossroads for Renuka Yenkoba, a 12-year-old girl.
She and her family are from the lowest of India’s
four main castes, the shudras or labourers. She is
on the threshold of adolescence and that means she
will soon be married. Even though it’s illegal in
India for girls to marry before they are eighteen,
by that age virtually half of Indian woman already
have a husband. Renuka is certain to be one of them.
