USA/Iraq: The Men Who Toppled Saddam's Statue 10 minutes, 2004 Ref: 385
It’s the most enduring image of the Iraq War – the toppling of Saddam’s statue in Baghdad. In an investigation that has spread from the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, to the back streets of Baghdad we have traced the men - both American soldiers and Iraqi who together pulled down Saddam Hussein's statue in Firdoos Square - an event that was to become the most iconic of the war. This news report combines, then and now pictures of the men in the square. In total we have tracked five men at the very epicentre of the action on the day the statue came down. The film opens with a photo-montage of the men involved in the square that day - soldiers in uniform and determined Iraqis wielding sledgehammers to take down the Saddam Hussein statue. It’s a fascinating story.
