Equatorial Guinea: America's New Oil

Equatorial Guinea: America's New Oil
10 minutes, 2004
Ref: 366

Equatorial Guinea is a tiny country in West Africa rich in oil. It's described as the Kuwait of Africa and the US is doing business there to make sure that it still has access to oil if all goes badly wrong in the Middle East. The US already gets 15 per cent of its oil from West Africa - they hope that will soon increase to 25 per cent. Equatorial Guinea is at the centre of the American oil strategy, despite evidence of corruption and a human rights record amongst the worst in Africa. Equatorial Guinea is a country of only half a million people. In this stunning film, we visit the tropical rain forests, speak openly with the president and see the corruption that seeps throughout his family while his people remain poor.
