Rarely in recent times has so much international responsibility been placed on someone barely known to the world. But the start of a new journey for peace in the Middle East, laid out in the so-called road map, is largely due to the emergence of Mahmoud Abbas, better known as Abu Mazen. His appointment as reforming Palestinian prime minister, taking much power away from Yasser Arafat, breaks the peace stalemate by winning American approval for a new peace process. And yet he's a man from the shadows, long in the background.
