In Indonesia, an Islamic cleric has taken the unusual step of trying to help prostitutes find a better way of life. Islam strictly forbids prostitution, so such an idea is extraordinary. Westerners’ views of Muslims are often coloured by the images of violence and stories of gender abuse in Muslim countries around the world. We visited the Mullah and attended one of his “sermons” for the prostitutes – scenes that would be hard to imagine in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait.
