Malawi: Hungry & Little Hope 5 minutes, 2003 Ref: 326
Malawi is primarily an agricultural country – but is widely believed to be the African country that suffers the most from famine. The people of Malawi depend heavily on outside help to survive. Government silos and warehouses used to be full of enough maize to tide Malawi over in case of an emergency. Then, last year, out of the blue, all of it was sold off. Government corruption is said to be behind the mystery of the disappearing food reserves. Most foreign donors are also insisting that all food donations be handled by the World Food Programme - a UN agency. None is being distributed by the government of Malawi.
