To most people, Thailand is a popular holiday destination, but for western security forces it is increasingly perceived as a centre for international terrorism. It's believed that the Bali bombings may have been planned - at least in part - in the Muslim south of Thailand - and it's the very relaxed approach that makes it attractive to travellers that may also make it a convenient centre for those plotting further strikes against the West. But the authorities seem reluctant to clamp down for fear of deterring the money-spinning tourist trade.
