Ireland: Local Hero (battle between oil company & locals) 10 minutes, 2004 Ref: 304
At first it was almost as if a huge crock of gold had been discovered just miles from one of the poorest areas of Ireland. A substantial reserve of natural gas promises a new clean energy supply and jobs for a deprived area. But despite the promise of "off-shore" riches, the locals are trying to stop a company owned by the energy giant Shell, building a pipeline from the gas field onto the picturesque mainland. The development has become a battlefield between locals, multi-nationals and the state. It's a marvellous account of local hopes and fears, the environment and economic need.
