Cambodia: Child Labour 7 minutes, 2001 Ref: 217
For many Cambodian children under-age working is not an issue, with the only issue being that they earn enough money to feed themselves and their family. For many youngsters, the chance to work in a textile factory run by a multi-national company such as Nike or Gap, means a way out of a boring, poor-paying job in the countryside. But the recent exposure of foreign companies in Cambodia using under-age labourers, caused a major crack-down, with Gap deciding to close its operations in the country. For many Cambodians all this has meant is the loss of jobs and managers being forced to make doubly sure that their workers are not under age. We find out some experiences of young workers.
