China, the world's biggest atheist state, is undergoing a spiritual revival. People are increasingly turning to faiths of all descriptions, but the government is cracking down on quasi-religious groups. Thousands have been detained. But the crackdown has failed to halt a remarkable revival in traditional religions, ranging from mainstream Buddhism to the occult. Many defy state control. We go to Fujian province in eastern China, where the authorities feel deeply uneasy.
