In Taiwan, the purchase of brides from all over Asia is big business. The greatest numbers of brides come from Vietnam, where living conditions are poorer. The going rate for a bride is $10,000. Nearly 20,000 Taiwanese men have married Vietnamese brides. In most cases, the men are lonely, and the women desperate for a better life. Few of these marriages work out. Some Vietnamese wives run back to their homeland because their husbands restrict their movements and some husbands beat their wives.
