Indonesia: Aceh - The Disputed Province 6 minutes, 1999 Ref: 124
Is more government violence about to be unleashed in Indonesia? Its new President, Abdurrahman Wahid, has threatened repressive force to put down independence movements across the country. Three months after East Timor voted to break away from Jakarta, the westernmost province of Aceh is renewing its long-standing claim to secede. The Free Aceh Movement is intensifying its guerrilla war against the Indonesian army. The army is in turn carrying out the sort of attacks on civilians that prompted international intervention in East Timor. We meet the main players in this dispute.
