UK: Field of Genes 8 minutes, 1999 Ref: 39
British consumers are probably the most sensitive in the world when it comes to food safety issues. They still haven't got over the scandal of mad cow disease where beef infected with BSE reached the human food chain. So far 40 people have died from the human equivalent of BSE and France & Germany still refuse to buy British beef. Britain doesn't grow GM crops commercially but started field tests this year. Greenpeace activists have launched dramatic protests. They are against even testing GM crops and raid GM crop testing sites. We look at this highly sensitive issue.
