The British countryside has effectively been closed by foot and mouth disease as the cull of infected animals continues. One of the worst effected areas is the county of Cumbria, where the hopelessness of the situation and despair is everywhere. Farmers are frustrated and furious at the agonising wait to have slaughtered animals buried. And more disturbing, even than the heartbreak and anger, is the sense that this appalling contagion is out of control.
