Mexico : The Zapatistas

Mexico : The Zapatistas
11 minutes, 2001
Ref: 29

A rare report from the heart of the rebel Zapatista movement in Mexico. Of international renown, the Zapatistas rose up in the southern state of Chiapas in 1994 to demand more rights for Mexican Indians. The Mexican President says he's ready to accept demands made by the rebels if they lay down their weapons and reach agreements. The rebels have called on the government to withdraw troops from Chiapas, release Zapatista prisoners, and approve stalled legislation strengthening the rights of indigenous people. Negotiations between the government and the rebels collapsed in 1996.
